If you’ve ever thought about starting a career as photographer then it’s likely that you asked “How much can a photographer earn?”…
I hate to answer with “It depends”, so I’ll go into some more detail on what can hinder and help a photographers earning potential…
And no, years of experience isn’t a factor that’ll determine what you can make 😉
Get Out On Your Own
The first problem with wondering how much photographers earn, is that it assumes that it’s a job you can get, like a School Teacher, a Doctor or a Banker, which all have fairly specific wage ranges.
And there are jobs you can get as a photographer, such as becoming an assistant to a photographer who runs a business, in which case you’ll usually be paid between $10 and $21 an hour (as reported on – http://www.bls.gov/oes/current/oes274021.htm)…
But if you want real success and financial freedom, you should aim to start your own photography business. Be your own boss and make your own money…
You’ll earn far more money, build long lasting relationships with clients, and have much more fun in your career and life!
Then What Can I Earn?
Thankfully, your success isn’t determined by the number of years you’ve been in photography, the size of your portfolio, and isn’t even hugely affected by your skill as a photographer…
After all, some of the highest paid, and most in demand photographers don’t take the most amazing photos!
That’s just the way it is…
What’s required IS great marketing strategies… Ways to attract new clients and make more profits.
The good thing is that most photographers never bother to study marketing, so they struggle to build their businesses and assume that there isn’t much money in photography.
The truth is that a good photographer, coupled with great marketing strategies shouldn’t find it difficult to be earning an income in the 6 figure range ($100,000+ per year in first world countries) within 1-2 years of getting started, which is closer to $55/hour for the same number of hours.
The Overlooked Key Is In The Marketing
The success of any business, whether it’s a Photographer, Builder, or even a Bakery depends on the marketing.
The majority of photographers never bother to learn more about marketing their businesses.
They take the position that “I’m a Photographer, not a Marketer” – and for this reason they are doomed to struggle. But it’s the same reason that it’s easy for motivated photographers like you to come and claim your share of the clients.
So I hope I’ve given you a better idea of how much a Photographer can earn, and I trust that you’ll consider starting your own business instead of looking for a job with another Photographer (unless you really need the experience).
